Book Crossing

book crossing

BookCrossing is the act of releasing books 'into the wild' and then following their journeys and the lives they touch.

BookCrossing combines serendipity, adventure, altruism and literature in an unique mix that true bibliophiles find irresistible. With its similarity to releasing messages in a bottle, or notes in helium balloons...

It works by BookCrossers registering their books at the bookcrossing website so that each book has its own BCID (BookCrossing ID number), which is used to 'tag' or label the book. People who 'catch' a wild book follow the instructions on the label to go to www.bookcrossing.com to see where the book has been and to make a new journal entry so that other BookCrossers know it's in good hands.

After they have read it, they release it again on park benches, in coffee shops, in phone booths ... as long as others can find it.

txtSHOTS has released four books 'into the wild' from the Meeting Bench.

Please feel free to 'capture' a book ... and set it free again once you have read it or use txtSHOTS as a Crossing Zone to place your books for others to find.

High Tea, Low Tea ... Afternoon Tea?

high tea

Today, when we think of High Tea, it is usually a grand affair, with formal settings, tea accessories and fine tea equipage. Yet contrary to common belief, High Tea was a neccessity for the poor working class of Britain.

The poor, working class of England could only afford one good solid meal a day and this meal was usually lunch. When the workers returned home in the evenings they were understandably hungry.

A pot of tea at 6pm and a few little leftover scraps of whatever they could find was the beginnings of High Tea. These tiny, simple 'meals' were to just to tide them over until the next day - leftovers of sausages, bread and cheese were the most common scraps.

As England and its citizens became more wealthy, with more people termed as 'middle class,' High Tea became a much more substantial meal at 6pm. Cooked eggs, mashed potatoes and fish etc were added to the original pot of tea.

Today, dinner has replaced High Tea, with cups of tea still being drunk after the evening dinner meal. Low Tea was the original term given to the afternoon teas created by Anna, Duchess of Bedford. Low Tea was served mid-afternoon to the aristocrats.

Confused darlings? Best to pop in for a High Tea at txtSHOTS on a Wednesday or Thursday afternoon from 2pm.

You will enjoy delicate finger sandwiches of smoked salmon, classic cucumber and curried egg along with baby ham and cheese croissants, lemon curd tarts, chocolate caramel cups, freshly baked scones, Gin Gin jams and creme fraiche plus a pot of T2 tea of your choice.

Bookings are essential for this aristocratic mid-afternoon repast. Please call 9242 1006.

Foursquare - Tweeting

four square

Foursquare is an online service that allows users to create an online record of the places they've been and things they've done.

It encourages you to explore your local area and share your favourite places with your friends and find out about new things to do in a particular area that you might otherwise have missed.

Foursquare likens the service to an 'urban mix tape.' It's part city guide, part mobile social network, part game.

Once you've signed up to Foursquare you can 'check in' to places using your smartphone. Checking in simply means that when you visit a location such as txtSHOTS espresso bar, you can let people know that you're there by checking in via your mobile phone and leaving a comment, for example: '@txtSHOTS espresso bar, enjoying gr8 coffee'.

If you check in frequently enough you become the Foursquare 'txtSHOTS Mayor' - and 'txtSHOTS Mayor' receives our Single Origin FREE for the day! All Hail the Mayor!

Single Origin Notes - Columbian Del Obispo

single origin

Very sweet with mild acidity. Notes of blackberry and dark chocolate. Syrupy, buttery mouth feel. Good body.

Used by Gwilym Davies to win the 2009 World Barista Championship in Atlanta, Del Obispo is a micro-lot from two small farms in Timaná and one in Acevedo (Huila).

The wet milling process used is the conventional washed process and after fermentation the parchment is sun-dried in patios.

There are around 60 families in the Montañita valley, Timaná and they base their economy mainly on agricultural produce and a small percentage on cattle farming.

The Sanjones valley, Acevedo is surrounded by 30 families where coffee production counts for nearly 90% of the economy of this area. They also grow plantain, mangoes and yuca mainly for family consumption.

The Del Obispo coffee is always clean with solid body and a malty, creamy mouth feel as espresso. Notably higher acidity, with crisp, zesty and green apple coming to mind, always a crowd pleaser as espresso.

Go on Nick off..!

Jon

By now you will have all have met the larger-than-life Nicholas Johnson. Yes, he of the almost-afro permanently bad hair-day!

Nick has been the powerhouse behind the Rugerro Americana but the boy needs to finish his education ... so back to Curtin Uni to complete his Chemical Engineering/Metallurgical degree ... and you all thought he was just a pretty face.

But we won't quite let him go though - he is a part-owner. Nick will be our backup barista and we expect he will be there almost every day whilst Saturdays will become his special day when he can reclaim the machine just to himself.

Meanwhile we are very very pleased to announce the Jon A will move up into the position of Manager and keep the gr8baristacoffee flowing and the unquenchable enthusiasm to sell you a muffin, cupcake, panini or to tell you about the Meeting Bench, wifi etc etc.

Jon has a very strong background as a barista and in cafe management and we expect the cafe to grow and humm under his management!

Gr8 reviews

review

Four months from opening and we are delighted by the reviews we have been receiving. A special thank you to all those Urbanspoon reviews - they are unsolicited and give us a real buzz.

Brigitte Paterson from Home Barista online wrote this about our coffee - our blend - The Fix - ‘works brilliantly both through milk and black. The Sumatran comes through strongly with milk, with a beautiful dry herb and roasted almond flavours, while as black, the Yirgacheffe dominates, giving a buttery mouthfeel and strong aroma. They certainly do their blend justice, pulling awesome shots on their gorgeous raspberry Expobar Ruggero Americana.”

Coffee Flight

A Coffee Flight gives you the opportunity to see three coffees, two ristrettos and a piccolo latte in a line-up to allow comparison and appreciation of the many unique coffee aromas and flavours in coffee. Each month txtSHOTS will select a new Single Origin coffee bean to be part of our Coffee Flights.

Our Coffee Flights are designed to give you an appreciation of the many unique coffee aromas and flavours through two very distinct ristrettos - a Single Origin and our house blend, 'The Fix'.

Ristretto, literally means shrunk, a concentrated espresso cut short - only 15-20ml is extracted in 20 seconds.

We suggest you taste the two ristrettos first and look at the Coffee Wheel before reading the Tasting Notes and see how close you came to identifying the distinct aromas and flavours.

Coffee has over 800 aromatic compounds and you will pick up different aromas and tastes as the coffees cool. Work back and forth, tasting and re-tasting the two ristrettos and use the water to rinse between tastes.

Finally, sit back and enjoy the small biscuit and your piccolo latte. Also note the effect of milk and sugar on your palate too...enjoy!

$20 Pre-Paid Bean Cards

Nick

Two customers have suggested that it would be much easier to have a pre-paid coffee card rather than scratching around each morning trying to find a few gold coins for their morning coffee fix, especially when they are rushing to work.

So here it is! ... But wait there's more:

When you purchase the $20 Pre-Paid Coffee Card we actually give you 5 coffees plus an additional coffee or muffin. If you do the sums that makes your morning coffee now only $3.33 a cup.
